The media objectifies and depicts women in a way that is sexist and unfair on a regular basis, and as a society, we let this slip through our fingers. Networks convince both women and men that women can only be valued for their appearances and sexual appeal. Thus, women are discouraged from being taken seriously in leadership roles and at an intellectual standpoint. While we may not realize it, the media is extremely prevalent in our everyday lives and has much power and influence over us (Carey, 2016).
2.1 Literature Review
Studies have shown that women are represented more negatively in the media, they are shown as unserious news sources. Often an image of women in the media presented in a stereotyped form such as, nurturing mother, and wife or as a sex objects. The underrepresentation of women in the media, stereotyping and sex role socialization is still a feature of, media content (McQuail, 2010). The media has been persistent in the stereotyped presentation of women, their perceptions, and experiences that continue to negate women’s roles and contribution in societal development. The power of media representation on society on one hand and the power of celebrities influence on society on the other.
This study provides the background into the emergence of tabloids in South Africa by looking at the history of South African newspapers. Furthermore, the theory of social constructionism will be discussed due to its particular relevance to the phenomenon of media representations, this discussion on media representations puts into focus the continuing debate on media reports versus reality. It is evident that from this discussion the objectivity of the media remains a burning issue (Matsebatlela, 2009:18).
2.2 Media representation of black women
Media representations refer to the signs and symbols that claim to stand for reality, people, events or cultural identities. The assumption within media studies is the way members of society see themselves, how others treat them will be determined by the manner in which they are presented in the media. Therefore media plays an important role in the determining the picture we have about the world, our origins and identities are partly constructed by images portrayed in media.
Four most common attributes portrayed by women in the media are weak, unintelligent, over-emotional and self-centered. Through this form of stereotyping, it has become clear that representations of Black women are further misrepresented. Gqola (2010: 69) suggests that representations of black women are often challenging to feminist writers. Furthermore, she writes about black women who have been thrown to fame. In South Africa, the news media is saturated with “the existence of blatant as well as subtle gender stereotypes (Buiten, 2007:115). The South African media legitimizes and maintains women’s reduction (Buiten, 2007: 116).
The representation of women in media can be analyzed from various perspectives. It could be representation in terms of portrayal of women, coverage of women’s issues, empowerment in the workplace and the presence of women in important reported issues. When we talk of portrayal of women, we refer to the extent to which media depict women (Govender, 2010:11). The stereotypical perceptions are endowed in our society and issues of masculinity and femininity are constructed by our society.

According to Trans Media International- TMI (2009), representation refers to the construction in any medium, especially the mass media aspects of reality such as people, events and cultural identities etc. In a fast communicating world where people and messages constantly move at a high speed, media plays a big role in the construction of one’s identity. The behavior of some people is influenced by media representations of their role models behavior.
It is important to realize that by mediating for their audiences the real world, the media create another version of their reality. Representations are selective just in the sense that, out of a huge amount of information, the media actually present very little (Govender, 2010:11).
Like for instance radio news, only few stories are selected to become part of a news programs and items are edited from several hours to just a few minutes. Even in newspapers which have more space to report news, have many stories that get edited down from several pages to just a few lines or do not get printed. A tabloid newspaper such as Sunday Sun is more likely to report about a popular singer’s poor fashion sense than The Star or Sunday Times. Similarly, an in-depth analysis of political floor-crossing by party members is more likely to be reported in The Mail & Guardian than Daily Sun (Matsebatlela, 2009:18).

Newspapers make money through sales and need to maintain high circulation figures to remain profitable. Notwithstanding their extraordinariness, celebrities are at the same time ordinary people, living a spectacular as well as an everyday life, making them essentially paradoxical (Dyer 2007: 35).
2.3.1 The power of celebrities’ influence on society
The production of entertainment media worldwide in recent decades has made celebrities powerful agents of social change and has expanded their influence across economic, political, and cultural boundaries (Matsebatlela, 2009: 37). In Nigeria, two of the nation’s most famous singers, King Sunny Ade and Onyeka Onwenu, released two hit songs and accompanying music videos, “Choices” and “Wait for Me”, to promote sexual responsibility.
The use of contraceptives increased from 16% to 26% among the target audience (aged 15 to 35) during the music campaign. These two examples illustrate the tremendous influence that celebrities can have on people’s behavior. We will now highlight the power of celebrities’ influence on society by focusing on the influence of music stars on identity construction, the impact of film stars on their fans’ behavior, and the influential power of celebrity endorsements (Nwaolikpe, 2014).
2.3.2 Stereotypes
We all complain about them; that in itself is a stereotype. But very few of us really understand what a powerful marketing tool they are. Another reason for the prevalence of stereotypes is that a large group of people who share similar characteristics is not easy to define. Women, for example, are put into the same category based on their sex and are assumed to share the same range of interests. These cues are meant to instantly signal a particular idea for this and other social groups – race, sexual orientation, class and so forth (Selisho, 2014).
2.3.3 Cultivation theory
Cultivation theory analysis provides an understanding of the influence and effects of one’s exposure to media. What is most popular tends to reflect and cultivate dominant cultural thoughts. Newspapers is a media source and it plays a similar role of informing and influencing its reader’s attitudes, and thoughts especially those who are often exposed to it. It is not uncommon to find certain biases existence in society and specific to certain individuals which may be different from those not exposed to a specific form of media (Okiring, 2013:7).
2.3.4 Cultural myths
Cultural myths can be found in every society and may be seen as the backbone to every social structure. Cultural myths do not die easily because they were formed in years, even in centuries. This myths were formed from beliefs, fear, and tradition because they were mostly created by man (Okiring, 2013:5). Okiring (2013:5) further states that there has long been a cultural assumption that woman are not natural character of history but men.
2.4 The readers/fans perceptions
The way female celebrities are represented on the covers may influence their fans concept of their own self-image as they learn through these portrayals about the acceptable and unacceptable gender roles in society. In other words, the covers play a role in reinforcing ideal masculine and feminine behaviors and what is perceived to be acceptable physical appearances for teenagers (Madlela, 2014: 4). Some celebrities upload photographs and videos that promote antisocial conduct, for example smoking marijuana or drinking alcohol. In some cases, when some celebrities have misunderstandings they insult each other online and fans join in the online-wars. Such behavior may set a wrong precedent for teenagers who may employ the same strategies in handling conflicts in the future. A glance at the images of the celebrities featured on magazine covers shows that teenagers are subjected to conflicting messages. It may be confusing for teenagers to know what is ideal because images of celebrities represent different concepts of masculine and feminine identity and appearance (Mandlela, 2014: 4).
